If you have a dog that tends to be stressed, has problems with being home alone, or a dog that gets scared in some situations, then this blog post is for you.
What do Adaptil and Aptus have in common:
Adaptil and Aptus are designed to reduce your dog's stress levels. They are natural medicines so you don't have to worry, even if you want to give them to your dog for longer periods. They don't have a sedative effect, so if you have a dog that is very, very afraid of things like fireworks, you can talk to your vet about sedating them instead.
Aptus Relax Chews
Aptus relax are small chews that contain a number of natural stress-relieving ingredients: Green tea powder, L-tryptophan and vitamin B1, which provide a calming effect. The effect occurs when your dog absorbs the chew, it usually takes 30-60 minutes from when you give the chew to your dog to feel an effect. The effect is strongest in the first 3-5 hours and then decreases over a day.
It may be beneficial to give your dog Aptus Relax for several days in a row, as stress hormones stay in the body of animals for a long time, just like they do in humans.
The effect of Aptus depends on your dog's reaction to L-tryptophan.
How much impact, including L-tryptophan, has on your dog, as well as its ability to absorb the content. There is no "one size fits all" as all dogs react differently, however we are experiencing good feedback.
Disadvantages of Aptus Relax:
Some dogs tend to vomit when they become very stressed and the product is also not suitable if your dog suffers from motion sickness, as it may also vomit.
Adaptil (pheromones)
Adaptil collars, diffusers and transport sprays are, unlike Aptus, not something your dog should ingest. Adaptil are artificially produced pheromones. The pheromones that have been produced are the same "signaling substance" that a mother dog secretes when she nurses her puppies and it is therefore associated with great security and well-being.
The purpose of Adaptil is for your dog to associate this "signal substance" with security and for its stress level to therefore decrease.
Collar or diffuser
- Diffusers for the home:
If your dog is upset about being home alone or is stressed about noise from neighbors or sounds in the hallway, then you will definitely be happy with the Adaptil home diffuser.
It can also be an advantage for puppies or adult dogs that need to be relocated and quickly associate the new home with a safe and pleasant place.
- Adaptil Collar
If your dog is very stressed, especially when outside, then this collar is for your dog.
The advantage of the collar is that your dog has its support with him at all times. The collar does not have to be removed during the 4 weeks that it is effective. The collar helps to lower your dog's stress level all the time, so that your dog generally becomes more balanced.
- Adaptil Transport spray
Adaptil Transport Spray can be sprayed directly into your car or your dog's transport crate and provide security when you are on the go.
Does Adaptil work: Whether your dog is very or slightly susceptible to pheromones is impossible to say, as it is very individual for your dog. It can take up to a week before you can notice a change in your dog, but that doesn't mean that your dog hasn't noticed it before, stress just takes a long time to get out of the body.
Disadvantages of Adaptil:
The collar should be worn for 4 weeks and although it is small and discreet, it is not exactly the prettiest collar. If your dog bathes, the collar should still be peeled off, as the effectiveness is reduced when it is in contact with water.
Adaptil Chews
Adaptil has also made chews that contain L-tryptophan. Here, 1 chew contains 5 grams of L-tryptophan more than Aptus Relax - but apart from that, they are very similar to each other.
