What is the best dog food?
It's a question we get very often – and the short answer is that there isn't one dog food that is best for all dogs.
All dogs are different, and their needs can vary depending on age, activity level, size, digestion, and preferences.
Your dog might do well on many different types of food, but the quality and composition significantly impact how well it thrives – both now and in the long term.
Here are two things we always recommend looking for when choosing dog food:
Read the ingredient list
Turn the package over and look at the ingredients.
The ingredient list should be transparent and easy to understand. You should be able to see:
• Which animals the food is made from
• Which ingredients are included
• What constitutes the majority of the food
Remember that the ingredient listed first is usually the one present in the largest quantity.
Look at the quality of the raw ingredients
Whether you choose dry food, BARF, or fresh dog food, the quality of the raw ingredients plays a big role.
It can be difficult for a dog owner to assess, but quality affects taste, digestion, and how well the dog can absorb nutrients.
The dry food we have chosen at Hunni is produced from raw ingredients such as free-range ducks, wild-caught fish, nest-laid eggs, and grass-fed lamb. For us, it's about transparent ingredients and high quality.
We have carefully selected different types of dog food that we find work very well for many dogs.
Dry Food
Dry food is the most popular type of dog food and works very well for many dogs. It's practical in everyday life and easy to store.
However, the quality of the ingredients makes a big difference.
For example, there's a difference between protein coming from whole animals or less nutritious by-products.
The clearer and more transparent the ingredient list, the easier it is to assess the quality.

MUSH (BARF)
BARF consists of raw food and often comes as practical, frozen meatballs.
MUSH is formulated as a complete food and contains the nutrients your dog needs daily.
Many choose BARF because they want a more natural and minimally processed alternative.
BARF requires freezer space and a bit of planning, but many dogs love both the taste and consistency.

Pala
Pala is an air-dried complete food made from natural ingredients with a high proportion of meat.
The consistency is somewhere between classic dry food and raw feeding. It is softer and more flavorful than traditional dry food, and many dogs find it extra appetizing.
Pala is minimally processed and produced by gentle air-drying, which helps preserve both flavor and nutrients.
It is particularly popular for picky eaters or dogs who need a little extra motivation at meal times.

Wet Food
Wet food is a popular choice for dogs who prefer more juicy and aromatic food.
The higher amount of liquid and the strong scent often make wet food particularly attractive – especially for picky eaters or dogs with less appetite.
It can be served alone as a complete meal or used as a topping with dry food.

Be extra cautious if:
• The ingredient list is very unclear
• You cannot see which animal ingredients the food contains
• The food primarily consists of fillers
• The taste mainly comes from added flavors rather than raw ingredients
This doesn't necessarily mean the food is bad – but it might be worth investigating a bit further.
Ultimately, the most important thing is not to find "the best dog food", but to find the food that best suits your dog
