Caring for an English Cocker Spaniel
Maintenance of the English Cocker Spaniel
It is recommended to brush the coat a couple of times a week and bathe the dog approximately every 14 days.
Brushing a Cocker Spaniel
The coat should be brushed regularly, as its length makes it prone to tangling and matting. Always use products and tools that do not damage the dog's coat or skin.
Clipping a Cocker Spaniel
For English Cocker Spaniels, the coat is typically trimmed along the back, neck, head, and on top of the tail to maintain the natural texture of the coat. This breed has a silky-soft coat, which is ideally hand-stripped, where the dead hair is gently removed so new hair can grow.
The hair on the ears, legs, chest, and belly is left longer and shaped with scissors to maintain the breed's characteristic soft expression. For general coat care for family dogs, some areas can be carefully trimmed with scissors to keep the coat practical and well-groomed, but the back should still be hand-stripped to preserve the coat's quality.
Special attention
The long coat easily tangles. Ensure the coat is well-moisturized and cared for, as dry hair breaks and tangles more easily.
Recommended grooming visits
It is recommended to visit a professional dog groomer every 6–8 weeks for bathing, brushing, and trimming to avoid the build-up of knots and mats. In addition, the dog can be bathed approximately every 14–15 days at home to maintain the coat between visits.
