Maintenance
It is recommended to brush the coat once a week and bathe the dog approximately once a month.
Brushing
Weekly brushing helps minimize shedding in the home. It is important to use products and tools that do not damage your Border Collie's coat or skin.
Clipping
The Border Collie has a coat that renews itself seasonally, leading to shedding of old fur. Therefore, the coat should not be clipped short, but instead maintained with regular brushing and light shaping with scissors.
Special attention
Be sure to protect the nose and paw pads from drying out to avoid cracks that can lead to sores.
Recommended grooming visits
The breed should be professionally groomed every 8–12 weeks, depending on the extent of shedding. Visits may be more frequent in spring and autumn when coat changes are most significant. Additionally, it is recommended to bathe the dog monthly to maintain healthy skin and coat.
Brushes for Border Collies
Border Collies typically shed twice a year.
It is recommended to brush the coat once a week with a long-bristled brush to prevent tangles and loose hair in the home.
An undercoat rake allows you to remove loose undercoat without affecting the coat's natural protection.
A spray conditioner can help reduce static in the coat, add shine, and improve moisture balance.

Shampoo and Conditioner for Border Collies
A monthly bath is ideal for keeping the dog clean and odor-free.
During shedding periods, it is recommended to increase the frequency to every 14 days with products that moisturize and condition the coat, helping to reduce shedding.
Finishing with conditioner helps soften the coat and remove loose hair. Nourishing conditioner with protein is a good choice for Golden Retrievers. It moisturizes and nourishes the coat, helps remove dead hair during shedding, and cares for the skin, creating a healthy foundation for strong and shiny coat from root to tip.
If bathing is not possible, a dry shampoo or no-rinse products can provide effective cleaning.

Clipping a Border Collie
The Border Collie has a double coat with both guard hairs and an undercoat, which protects against weather and temperature. Therefore, the coat should not be clipped short or shaved, as it can compromise its natural protection and affect the dog's ability to regulate heat and cold.
Grooming instead involves regular brushing and maintenance. Light trimming can be beneficial to keep the coat tidy and functional in everyday life – especially around the paws, between the paw pads, and at the rear for better hygiene.
The longer coat areas on the legs, tail, and behind the ears can be gently shaped with scissors to maintain a natural look and prevent matting.
Removing loose undercoat is more important than clipping, as it helps reduce shedding and keeps the coat healthy, airy, and functional all year round.

Nail Clippers for Border Collies
The Border Collie is a medium-sized dog with strong nails, requiring a nail clipper of appropriate size to be clipped safely and effectively.
A nail clipper for medium-sized dogs provides good control and the necessary strength to clip the nails in small, precise steps. This minimizes the risk of hitting the quick and ensures a clean cut.
Choose a nail clipper suitable for medium-sized breeds, preferably with sharp blades and a good grip, to ensure maximum control and confidence during clipping.
